In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, equipment determines damage, speed and survivability more than pure leveling. Weapons scale hard with attributes, unlock new effects via upgrades and – if chosen incorrectly – can be significantly weaker than previous alternatives, even at a high level. This guide shows you which weapons are really worthwhile, where you can find them and how you can improve them.
Weapon stats & scaling – why attributes are more important than raw power
Each weapon has a scaling (S-D) on certain attributes such as vitality, agility or luck. This scaling determines how much the weapon grows with invested attribute points. A weapon with S scaling on your main attribute will almost always be stronger in the long term than a weapon with a higher base value but poorer scaling.
In addition, upgrades not only change numerical values, but also scaling ranks. The thresholds at level 4, 20 and 33 are particularly relevant, as new effects are often unlocked or scaling is improved here.
Which attributes go with which weapons? (brief overview)
- Vitality: Ideal for physical weapons with S/A scaling (e.g. Lanceram, Sakaram).
- Agility: Important for speed builds, parry playstyles and weapons with agility scaling.
- Luck: Key attribute for crit and status builds (e.g. Charnon, Choralim).
- Defense: Relevant for defensive scaling and stance synergies (e.g. Medalum).
Note: First determine the attribute direction, then choose the weapon – not the other way around.
Improve weapons: Curator, Catalysts & Max-Level 33
Weapon upgrades can be obtained from the curator in the warehouse, who is unlocked in the course of the story (after the “Flying Waters” area). Each catalyst level sets a maximum level:
- Chroma catalytic converter – up to level 3
- Polished Chroma catalytic converter – up to level 9
- Magnificent Chroma catalytic converter – up to level 19
- Grandiose Chroma catalytic converter – up to level 32
- Perfect chroma catalytic converter – up to level 33
Practical tip: Define one core weapon per character and upgrade it specifically to the next threshold – this is more efficient than many half-leveled weapons.
Gestral Arena: Missables & crucial weapons
The Gestral Arena in Act 1 is one of the most important points for strong early weapons. The decisive factor is: Only the character who wins the final battle receives the reward.
Recommendation: Win the final battle with Maelle to obtain Medalum. This weapon is otherwise only available via a much more difficult alternative duel (Golgra).
Best weapons – recommendations by character & game phase
Maelle
Maelle benefits greatly from weapons that combine defensive scaling with high base damage. Even in the early game, Brulerum is a solid choice, as it delivers reliable damage and is automatically unlocked in the “Flying Waters” area via the story progression.
From Act 2 onwards, Medalum is one of the best weapons in the entire game. It only unfolds its full potential with upgrades, scales strongly with defense and supports a controlled, safe play style. You will receive Medalum if Maelle wins the final battle in the Gestral Arena. If this opportunity is missed, the only remaining option is the much more difficult optional duel against Golgra.
Lune
Lune relies heavily on status and crit builds. Trebuchim is an excellent early-game weapon with lightning damage and is unlocked either via the arena or enemies in the Ancient Sanctuary.
Deminerim is particularly recommended in the midgame. You receive this weapon as a reward from the Deminer sidequest and benefit from efficient scaling to vitality. In the endgame, Choralim is the best choice, as it scales strongly with luck and is ideal for critical hits. It is unlocked via a late side quest.
Gustave / Verso
Lanceram is a safe choice for Gustave and Verso throughout all phases of the game. The weapon has stable physical scaling and can be obtained early on via story progression or from traders. Constant upgrades keep it competitive right through to the endgame.
Sciel
Charnon is Sciel’s clear endgame weapon. It scales strongly with luck and is ideal for aggressive DPS builds. You get it as a drop from a boss in the “Renoir’s Designs” area.
Monoco
Monoco only unfolds its full potential in the endgame. Joyaro is the best choice here, as it supports speed and mask synergies. You can find the weapon in an optional endgame dungeon.

Best equipment besides weapons
In addition to weapons, the most important equipment in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 consists of so-called Pictos and Luminas. These items of equipment improve attributes, combat effects and build synergies and are particularly important in the middle and late stages of the game.
Pictos
Pictos are equippable items that give your character direct bonuses. These include higher damage, better defense, larger time windows for parries or improved critical hits.
You can obtain Pictos in various ways:
- in Truhen in Haupt- und Nebenarealen
- als Belohnung für Nebenquests
- als Drop von Elite-Gegnern oder Bossen
- im späteren Spielverlauf auch über Händler
Pictos can be used by several characters and can be flexibly adapted to the playing style, weapon and role in the team.
Luminas
If a Picto is actively used for several battles in a row, its effect is permanently unlocked. This effect is then available as Lumina.
Luminas are particularly valuable as they are not tied to a single piece of equipment. Once unlocked, they can be used permanently in various builds and have a significant impact on the endgame in particular.
Welche Ausrüstung ist sinnvoll
Which equipment is best depends on the style of play. The following is a tried and tested guide:
- Frühes Spiel: defensive und verzeihende Effekte
- Mittleres Spiel: ausgewogene Kombination aus Schaden, Tempo und Nutzen
- Endgame: gezielte Lumina-Kombinationen mit klaren Synergien
Remember: Weapons determine the damage potential. Equipment determines how reliably and efficiently this potential is used.
Our conclusion
The best weapons in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 are not automatically the ones with the highest stats, but the ones that fit your attributes, playstyle and upgrade plan. If you secure important missables early on, upgrade weapons specifically to thresholds and consistently align attributes with scaling, you will get significantly more stable builds and avoid expensive mistakes later in the game.
