Blackbeard already carries two powerful devil powers in One Piece – but many fans believe his journey doesn’t end at two. In this theory, I explore what third fruit he could get, what clues Oda may have hidden – and why a mythical Zoan in particular comes strongly into play as a candidate.
Why this theory is so popular
Blackbeard is already an enigma – he has two devil fruits, something no one else can do. His symbolism with the “3” (three skulls on his flag, three pistols, three braids in his beard) fuels speculation: could he obtain a third fruit? Many fans suspect that it would have to be a Zoan to complete the series (Logia, Paramecia, Zoan).
In the following, I first look at the facts – and then at my theory of what this third fruit might look like and what clues Oda may have laid.
Known facts & hints
- Blackbeard’s previous powers: He possesses the Yami Yami no Mi (Logia / Darkness) and the Gura Gura no Mi (Paramecia / Earthquake).
- Symbolism of the “3”: Three skulls on his flag, three pistols, three pigtails – the number 3 runs through his design and symbolism.
- Hints by Oda: Several interviews and panels suggest that Blackbeard has not yet shown his full potential – a third fruit would complete the picture.
- Popular fan theories: Many theories cite mythical zoans such as Cerberus or Kraken as the possible source of its special body structure.
My theory: The third fruit is a mythical zoan – model Cerberus or Kraken
I think Blackbeard’s third devil fruit will be a mythical zoan – something with multiple heads or hearts. Two candidates stand out:
- Cerberus (three-headed dog): Three heads, three souls – a perfect match for his flag and build. This Zoan could explain how he can bear several devil powers at the same time.
- Octopus / octopus model: Octopuses have multiple hearts. Such a fruit could biologically allow to “stabilize” multiple fruits – a wild but fitting thought to Blackbeard’s body anomaly.
He would thus embody all three main types (Logia, Paramecia, Zoan) – a perfect mirror image of his triple symbolism and at the same time the ultimate antagonist for Luffy.
Counterarguments & weaknesses of the theory
- Oda has never confirmed that three devil fruits are even possible – even two are considered a biological miracle.
- The symbolism with the number 3 could be purely aesthetic – without any deeper meaning.
- An additional Zoan would have to be well embedded in the narrative; otherwise it seems like an afterthought power upgrade.
Even if there is no evidence, the idea of a third fruit fits in perfectly with Blackbeard’s structure, symbolism and role in the story. Perhaps Oda has long since hidden the key – and we only recognize it in the grand finale.
