A new adventure in Middle-earth could soon become a reality. Insider reports suggest that a brand new The Lord of the Rings game is currently in development – and not just any game: it is said to be similar in scope and gameplay freedom to
100 million dollar budget and prominent partners
According to the information, the project is to receive financing of around 100 million US dollars. The main investor is the
The rights holders Embracer Group (known for its purchase of Middle-earth Enterprises) and the studio Revenge are also involved. The latter has so far been more active in the mobile sector, which raises questions among many fans – can a studio with this experience handle an AAA game?
The game itself – what is known so far
- Genre & perspective: A third-person action game is planned that will offer an open world, exciting battles and plenty of freedom.
- Orientation: Comparisons with Hogwarts Legacy suggest that story, exploration and RPG elements are in the foreground.
- Time frame: It is currently unclear in which era of Middle-earth the game will be set – whether during the time of the War of the Ring, in an earlier era or a completely separate scenario.
- Platforms: No information yet. A release for PC and current consoles would be realistic.
Why the project is so exciting
After the huge success of Shadow of Mordor (2014) and Shadow of War (2017), fans are waiting for a new highlight in Middle-earth. The more recent Gollum game failed to meet expectations, which is why the community is all the hungrier for a big, serious LOTR project.
With a budget of 100 million dollars, a strong brand and Embracer in the background, this game could deliver exactly that. However, the question remains: can a rather unknown studio like Revenge fulfill the high expectations?
Caution: Another rumor
As exciting as this all sounds, it is currently insider information with no official confirmation. Neither Embracer, ADIO nor Revenge have publicly announced the project yet. The deal is to be finalized “in the coming weeks”. Until then, the whole thing remains an exciting but unconfirmed rumor.
