The Witcher 4 & Cyberpunk 2077: CD Projekt repositions itself

After the release of the highly anticipated sci-fi video game Cyberpunk 2077, the Polish game company CD Projekt now announced a change in strategy for the coming years. The focus will be on the parallel development of The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 franchises starting this year.

CD Projekt Red: The Polish company realigns itself

Publisher CD Projekt expanded its previous video game portfolio with the sci-fi role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077, which was released on December 10, 2020. In the future, the Polish publisher wants to work on new content for the Cyberpunk and The Witcher universes in parallel.

In order to be able to handle this project, the number of employees has already been multiplied in recent years. At the beginning of 2021, the Canadian developer studio Digital Scapes was also incorporated into the Group and renamed CD Projekt Red Vancouver. The publisher had already been working successfully with the latter for several years.

CD Projekt presents the official “Strategy Update”

The parent company CD Projekt S.A. already announced a “Strategy Update” at the beginning of 2021. This includes its own goals for the coming years. These are composed as follows:

  • 1st: The focus continues to be on the production of high-quality role-playing games, which should have a higher proportion of action elements in order to reach a broad group of players. As a designation, these were dubbed “groundbreaking and story-driven role-playing games.”
  • 2nd: Brands such as The Witcher, Cyberpunk and other titles are to be created and expanded. These should take a place in modern pop culture. In addition to video games, merchandise and TV series will also be coming.
  • 3th: The Polish company has set itself the goal of securing a place alongside the established games publisher giants of the world.

CD Projekt Red also confirmed that the game development will be switched to a dual-franchise model starting in 2022. The company’s own triple-A games are then developed in parallel. This process goes under the name “RED 2.0”. The company announced that after Cyberpunk 2077, players can expect a new spin-off in The Witcher universe.

In addition to single-player games, online expansions & fan merchandise as well as TV series come

In addition to developing triple-A games, CD Projekt Red will expand them to include online experiences. In addition to the online card game Gwent, we could also expect multiplayer expansions for The Witcher and Cyberpunk in the future.

In addition to the previously released video games and merchandise for The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, more content is also expected in the digital media landscape. One of these announcements has already been realized with the cyberpunk anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. This has been running on streaming provider Netflix since September 13, 2022 and has been very well received by viewers.
