Sons of The Forest: Change the host and share the save – tutorial

© Endnight Games

The horror-survival game Sons of the Forest was able to attract numerous players already at the start of the Early Access phase on Steam on February 23, 2023. You can play the game either alone in single player or in multiplayer with friends. However, so far there are no online servers that you can rent.

So the entire progress of the game is on the PC of the player who is the host. Now, however, you or one of the friends would like to continue playing alone without depending on just one person. In this tutorial we will show you how to change the host and share the save.

Sons of The Forest: How to change the host and share the save with friends

Unfortunately, the hosting of co-op games in Sons of the Forest is not very well solved at the release in the Early Access phase. Either you host and your friends join you on the server or you connect to another player’s private server. The memory state is only stored on the PC of the host.

However, there is already a solution to this problem. One important requirement is that you and your teammates must have hosted a co-op lobby at least once. This will automatically create a new subfolder in the game folder for multiplayer mode. Find the location on your PC where the savegames from the game are located. These are saved under the following file path:

C:\Users{NAME}\AppData\LocalLow\Endnight\SonsOfTheForest\Saves{YOUR STEAM ID}

The Multiplayer folder is where all the saves of the hosted online lobby are stored. If you filter the folder by the latest modification date in the properties, you will find your latest save state the fastest. Now copy the corresponding multiplayer folder and send it together with the contained files to the new hoster.

For sending, for example, a file-sharing provider is a good choice. Sending via online instant messaging services like Discord will probably only work with a Pro subscription, since the maximum upload size is limited in the free subscription. Last but not least, the recipient must now move the folder along with files to their own game folder on the PC.

Sons of The Forest: When changing the host also transfer the inventory

The game world as well as the built structures are now with the new host. However, the player inventories must also be transferred separately. Under the previously described location of the game on the PC there is a folder called “MultiplayerClient”. The player properties and progress are stored here.

The following files must be copied from this folder and sent to the new host:

  • PlayerInventorySaveData
  • PlayerArmourSystemSaveData
  • PlayerClothingSystemSaveData
  • PlayerStateSaveData
  • PlayerRetrieveDroppedInventoryActionSaveData

Make sure to send the client folder belonging to the server. Here, too, it is a good idea to filter the properties of the folder according to the most recent modification date in order to find the most recent save state as quickly as possible.

With our guide on how to share the Sons of The Forest multiplayer save state, changing the active host should no longer be a problem. Hopefully, the developer Endnight Games will improve this with future updates or deliver the hosting or renting of online servers.
