In our guide to the game Baldur’s Gate 3, we’ll go into more detail about pickpocketing and show you if it’s worth becoming a kleptomaniac. Moreover, if the theft does not succeed, you have a few options to interact with the one opposite you. And you might get around a penalty if you fail.

The pickpocket in Baldur’s Gate 3

The fantasy role-playing game Baldur’s Gate 3 offers you a lot of possibilities to interact with your environment or with the characters and creatures. You’ll embark on a journey through Faerûn, fighting countless enemies, leveling up your characters and collecting lots of armor, weapons and items. However, there is also a quick and unfair way to get new items. You can sneak up on unsuspecting NPCs and relieve them of their belongings.

If you have chosen a rogue as your own character, this will increase your chances for a successful theft. The potential companion Astarion is a good choice for this, as he has the ability “Stealth”. He also receives a bonus on the values of the stolen goods.

Perform the theft in Baldur’s Gate 3

Unlike the trap disarming or lock picking mechanics, you don’t need any special tools for the theft. However, it is important that you steal from the NPCs secretly without getting caught. Once you have chosen a victim that you want to relieve of the objects in your inventory, the first thing you have to do is crouch down. The standard key assignment on the PC is Shift + C and on the controller the short hold down of the arrow down key.

In the creeping state, you must now sneak up on your victim. Also, make sure that no other NPC is watching you in the immediate vicinity. If you sneak close enough, all you have to do is press the pickpocket button and the inventory of the person you want to steal from will open.

Pickpocketing in Baldur’s Gate 3 opens the NPC’s inventory in the game.

The items in the NPC’s inventory each have a different target value. This value determines how likely a successful theft will be. The more valuable the item, the higher this value. Thus, a valuable armor or weapon is harder to steal than, say, a simple healing item or a weak dagger. Now, when an object of desire is clicked, the cube starts rotating (without visualization).

When stealing, don’t leave the NPC’s inventory open for too long, as he or another approaching NPC might notice the pickpocketing.

What happens if the theft is unsuccessful

If your sneaking or pickpocketing fails even in Baldur’s Gate 3, you will face consequences. However, you still have the possibility to react and turn the theft into a good thing. If you are caught stealing, the NPC will confront you and several response options will open up to you.

You can simply try to talk your way out of it, return the stolen goods, offer a bribe … or you can launch a sneak attack. By the way, the bribe attempt can also go wrong and the NPC will get angry rather than be appeased. If the excuses fail, you will have to go to jail for a certain period of time. If you don’t want to do that and the theft fails, your only option is to fight openly or take flight.
